Young Carer Hails ‘Invaluable’ Annual Respite Festival
A young carer has praised the “invaluable” impact of the Wales Young Carers Festival as the event prepares to welcome record numbers in its third year.
Thomas Ashwell-Lewis, aged 17 and from Monmouthshire, has been a young carer for 11 years, supporting his mum in caring for his sister who has cerebral palsy. Having attended the previous two festivals, Thomas shared how the experience has had a lasting impact on his life.
This year, he returns not only as an attendee, but as a trainee youth worker, bringing a new perspective to the festival and continuing his journey of growth and development.
Building Condidence, Friendships, and Opportunities
Speaking about his experience, Thomas said:
“Thanks to the festival I’ve made lasting friendships with other young carers.
Activities on offer have also helped me build confidence and develop leadership skills, which have helped me in my new role.
Whether you’re looking to relax or have a busy few days filled with fun, the festival is a holiday from your responsibilities and a chance to recharge your batteries. It’s invaluable for our own mental health and wellbeing.
I’m excited to return this year and experience the festival from a different perspective.”
A Space to Rest, Recharge, and Be Recognised
The Wales Young Carers Festival provides young people with a much-needed break from their everyday responsibilities. Through a carefully planned programme of activities, entertainment, and wellbeing support, the festival creates a safe and inclusive environment where young carers can relax, connect, and feel valued.
From creative workshops and outdoor challenges to evening entertainment and social experiences, the festival offers something for everyone—ensuring each young person can enjoy their time in a way that suits them.
This year’s festival will welcome 350 young carers aged 11 to 18 from across Wales, making it the largest event to date.
Running from Tuesday 20 August to Thursday, the festival features a wide range of activities including:
Graffiti art and music production
Inflatables and outdoor activities
Cinema experiences and silent disco
Recognising the Importance of a Break
Dawn Bowden, Minister for Social Care, also highlighted the importance of the event:
“Young carers do so much to support family or friends, whether that is physical or emotional support. The importance of them being able to have a break from their caring role should not be underestimated.
I am delighted this year’s Young Carers Festival will welcome more young carers than ever before. I hope they all enjoy another wonderful experience.”
Creating Lasting Impact
Melanie Rees, co-ordinator of the Wales Young Carers Festival from the charity Credu, said:
“This annual event is a unique opportunity for young carers to take a much-needed break from caring and receive the recognition they deserve for all their hard work.
Everything from camping arrangements to activities, entertainment, and food and drink is provided, ensuring that young carers can fully enjoy themselves without any financial worries.
We are proud of what has been achieved by the festival to date and we look forward to building on this success for years to come.”
The Wales Young Carers Festival continues to grow year after year, providing young people with the opportunity to build confidence, form friendships, and experience something truly meaningful.
For young carers like Thomas, the festival is more than just an event—it’s a space to grow, connect, and feel recognised.
