Annual Festival ‘Life Changing’ for Young Carers
The Wales Young Carers Festival—now welcoming a record number of attendees—has once again been described as “life changing” by the young people it supports.
Among them is Ffion Scott, an 18-year-old from Wrexham, who has been a young carer for her mum, who is disabled, since the age of four. Ffion has attended every festival since 2022 and has experienced first-hand the powerful impact it has on young carers across Wales.
This year, she returned not only as an attendee but as a member of the Young Carers Advisory Board, where she had the opportunity to meet with the Minister for Children and Social Care to discuss issues that matter most to young carers.
Building Condidence, Friendships, and Opportunities
Speaking about her experience, Ffion shared:
“Thanks to the festival I’ve made lasting friendships with other young carers.
The activities on offer have helped me build confidence and develop leadership skills, which have supported me in my new role.
Whether you’re looking to relax or have a busy few days filled with fun, the festival is a holiday from your responsibilities and a chance to recharge your batteries.
It’s invaluable for our mental health and wellbeing.
I’m excited to return this year and experience the festival from a different perspective.”
A Space to Rest, Recharge, and Be Recognised
Melanie Rees, co-ordinator of the Wales Young Carers Festival from the charity Credu, highlighted the importance of the event:
“This annual event is a unique opportunity for young carers to take a much-needed break from their caring responsibilities and receive the recognition they deserve for all their hard work.
Everything—from camping and activities to entertainment, food, and drink—is provided, ensuring that young carers can fully enjoy themselves without any financial worries.
We are incredibly proud of what the festival has achieved so far and look forward to building on this success for years to come.”
Recognising the Importance of a Break
Dawn Bowden, Minister for Social Care, also emphasised the value of the festival:
“Young carers do so much to support family members, whether physically or emotionally. The importance of giving them the opportunity to take a break from their caring role cannot be underestimated.
I am delighted that this year’s festival will welcome more young carers than ever before, and I hope they all have a wonderful experience.”
Creating Lasting Impact
The Wales Young Carers Festival continues to grow year after year, providing young people with not just a break, but a space to build confidence, form friendships, and feel recognised for the incredible role they play in their families and communities.
For many, like Ffion, it’s more than just a festival—it’s a life-changing experience.
